How did it start?
SunLED Life Science began with a simple but powerful idea: what if we could bring the health benefits of sunlight indoors?
Dr. Anne Berends, a materials scientist with a PhD in nanomaterials from Utrecht University, was driven by both scientific curiosity and a desire to make a real-world impact. After years of academic research, she joined a deep-tech incubator in Amsterdam where she initiated and built an entirely new research program focused on the biological effects of near-infrared light: the invisible, UV-free part of sunlight that supports sleep, energy, recovery, and well-being.
Anne led the clinical validation, IP development, and product prototyping that would become the foundation for SunLED’s breakthrough technology. What began as a solo research effort evolved into a multidisciplinary team, a growing patent portfolio, and a clear mission: to improve people’s daily lives with light-powered health solutions.
In 2024, this work spun out into SunLED Life Science – an independent company turning light into well-being. With Anne now leading the team, SunLED has launched its first product, SunBooster, in 2025.
